Me and my then one year old daughter Poppy had promised to model for Pretty Disturbia to showcase both their matching mum and baby outfits and also their custom size range. I knew Poppy would be fine in front of the camera, I was more worried about me! Yes, I am plus size and no, I am definitely no model. In fact, the whole idea of being in front of the camera was making me feel a bit apprehensive. However I do love fashion, especially quirky and a little bit edgy styling, which I think PD represents with it’s bright red and purple tartan prints, knee patches, tie dye, vintage and one off items. And I would be lying if I claimed I am not vain even though I am not entirely comfortable in front of the camera. So I thought I’d give it a try.
On the day of the photo shoot
On arrival at PD headquarters I got given a generous helping of clothing for both me and Poppy to wear for the shoot. I was assured that I could pick what I felt comfortable wearing which instantly made me feel at ease. I had done my make up beforehand and both me and Poppy were wearing plain, mainly black clothing to let the PD items to do the talking. PD dolly Leesa was taking our photos next to a plain background and we were actually having a laugh. It was more natural to be in the photos with Poppy than alone I found. Everything went smoothly until Poppy got tired of the costume changes and we decided to call it a day.
The struggle is real
It’s not easy being bigger than most girls and it’s definitely not easy dressing your personality when you are plus sized. Most plus size retailers are not very adventurous with their designs and designer clothes are out of the question when you are bigger than size 14. It’s hard to stand out. That’s why it’s great to have independent, quirky labels that do custom sizes. Looking at the edited photos now I am glad I did it. I might not like myself in all the photos but overall I feel proud. Proud to have challenged myself and left my comfort zone. Proud to be different.
