This week at Pretty Disturbia, in light of International Women’s Day we’re celebrating women. All women, young and old, of all races and backgrounds. I’m constantly in awe of all the powerful women in the world. Everyday women have countless hoops to jump through and battles to fight. To the numerous amounts of women who are continuously breaking the synonymous glass ceiling making for a brighter, more equal society to those women, and all women I am eternally thankful.

I’m beyond grateful for so many women in my life. My mother for bringing me into this world, raising me, her patients and kindness. My paternal grandmother for molding my personality and minding me when I was sick. My maternal grandmother for passing on her creative talents and teaching me these skills. My girlfriends, who are always so supportive of me even when I’m being annoying or dramatic. My life long best friend, my soulmate and occasional therapist who I can rely on no matter what. She’s been with me through thick and thin and has tolerated me for so long. That’s what friends are for though, isn’t it? Having someone who is forever and always in your corner. A universe without women would just be so mundane and lifeless…. Quite literally.

There are so many iconic females to look up to and admire for their tireless efforts in this world. From the suffragettes in the early 20th century to the activists in today’s society who continue the struggle for equality. I find myself inspired by countless amounts of women, Countess Constance Markievicz, Coco Chanel, Maya Angelou, Malala Yousifazi, Audrey Hepburn, Taylor Swift to name but a few. There’s one woman though who has been my role model for my entire life and that’s my sister. There aren’t enough words in the English language to describe my admiration for her. A woman in STEM, top of her class since primary school, incredibly hilarious and kind my love for her runs deeper than the blood we share (and that one freckle).

Surround yourself with strong and encouraging women. Build each other up and help one and other. Make sure you’re telling the women in your life how grateful you are for them. Remind all the mothers out there how great they’re doing. Support women in the music industry. Read books written by women. Watch movies directed by woman. Encourage young girls to believe in themselves. Make sure they know they can be anything they want to be in this world. Women run the world! Remember that!

Tell us in the comments who are the women in your life you’re inspired by!
